Henna is a plant indigenous to Northern Africa, the Middle East, and Southern Asia. It has been used for thousands of years to dye skin, fingernails and hair.  Henna can be very messy, but some find the benefits far outweigh the mess and the hay-like smell.  For hair, you always want to look for “Body Art Quality” henna. This definitely makes a difference, and if the box or package doesn’t say this or “BAQ”, stay far away! Henna only comes in one color. If you see a box that says Black Henna or Red Henna, this is not body art quality which means it’s not pure henna and possibly contains PPD or Para-phenylenediamine.  PPD will have a negative effect on hair, especially if chemically treated. PPD is a toxic metal outlawed by the FDA for use on skin as it can cause blisters or worse and in the case of hair, excessive breakage and damage. Some of the benefits of using body art quality henna include thicker hair, a nice color ranging from subtle auburn highlights to full deep red or burgundy color, depending on your hair color.  If you want to get really creative with it, you can create a mixture of henna and indigo or kattam to get black or brown hair respectively. Since henna contains tannins, it bonds with existing proteins in the hair, making it stronger.  You can also use henna mixed in some conditioner to get the great conditioning properties without actually coloring your hair. It’s also less time consuming.

 While the benefits are great, there are some possible negatives such as excessive dryness,  which can be prevented or relieved by increasing your moisturizing deep treatments. Henna application can be time consuming and depending on your method of mixing and application, can take anywhere from two to eight hours. I’ve managed to cut mine down to about four hours but realize that for some, this is still too long!  Oh the mess… henna stains anything it touches so the first time you do a treatment, you may want to have someone help. Whether you choose to have an assistant or not, be sure to wear gloves during application and rinsing, and wear clothes you don’t care about. The first couple times, you may also want to lay newspaper out on your countertops and floor. Yea, it gets that messy! As with anything, do lots of studying and research before attempting. In my experience, the pros far outweigh the cons and my hair has never been happier!
